Parents exploring legal options to keep Pineland kindergarten

Appleby Line area parents like Elaina Hamelin are fighting to keep kindergarten at local Pineland Public School in Burlington. Halton District School Board recently made a last minute decision to cancel kindergarten to make room for the popular French Emersion program.

Their decision has caused havoc for some local parents. In Hamelin’s case, four of her children will be going to three different schools. Her daughter Carson will have to travel more than ½ kilometer to attend kindergarten at Mohawk Gardens Public School.

In a CBC April 6 interview, Hamelin pointed out that the Board spent more than $190,000 to set-up two full time kindergarten rooms at Pineland School. She also believes that the Board may be going against the Education Act.

However, according to Superintendent Halton District School Board Rob Eatough, Ontario does require all day kindergarten but French Emersion designated schools are exempt.
