Robert Bateman youth ambassador winners

Robert Bateman grade 10 students Imanjit Grewal and Connie Li recently won Burlington Transit’s Youth Ambassadors (BT-YA) $1,000 grand prize for their promotion of public transit.

The money will be put towards an environmental initiative at their school. They will also receive a $100 Burlington Mall gift card plus $50 uploaded to their PRESTO cards.

At a year-end Burlington Mall ceremony, Burlington Transit recognized its Burlington Transit Youth Ambassadors and awarded $1,200 to students, who demonstrated success in environmental activities within their school and community.

“The participation of these youth ambassadors and the work they do to spread the word about the benefits of using public transit is incredibly valuable,” said Scott Stewart, the city’s general manager of development and infrastructure.

“These students are the future and their enthusiasm, contributions and ideas will have a direct impact on the shape of future transit services in years to come.”

Launched in September 2011, the BT-YA program recruits two ambassadors from local high schools to promote transit and its link to the environment by organizing promotional events in their high schools. In 2014, there were 11 ambassadors from six participating high schools.

The 2014 youth ambassadors are currently featured in an advertising campaign located on the sides of city buses and in select shelters across Burlington. The campaign, called “Transit Our Future Rides on It,” encourages residents to also spread the word about transit by submitting their ridership stories to www.burlington.ca/btya .

All submissions will be entered for the chance to win prizes including an iPad mini, a $250 gift card from the Burlington Mall or one of five $50 PRESTO cards.

The BT-YA program, in partnership with BurlingtonGreen and its youth network, is designed to help promote transit awareness in local high schools. The ambassadors promote transit and run events in their high schools in exchange for rewards like gift cards or PRESTO cards and cash rewards to their school eco-club initiatives. The program helps youth build leadership skills and expand their knowledge of promotion and marketing.
