Canadian Red Cross joins Burlington flood relief

The Canadian Red Cross has joined the Burlington flood relief effort to help residents who are most impacted by the recent severe storm and record rainfall.

If you need help or would like to donate you can contact the local branch at 262 Guelph Line at (905) 637-5664.

Red Cross volunteers began visiting Burlington residents today to determine the greatest needs of those affected by the nearly 200 mm of rain that fell in three hours on Aug. 4. The high-intensity short-duration storm caused creeks to overflow and resulted in road closures and flooded basements in many areas of the city.

“Many families who were affected by the flood in Burlington are faced with the enormous challenge of getting their homes and lives back to normal following the storm,” said Jeff Weber, the City of Burlington’s deputy fire chief. “The Red Cross is here to see what help is needed as people recover from the flooding.”

Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Burlington on Monday to co-ordinate volunteers to help residents with their cleanup efforts. They are looking for volunteers and can be reached at 905-592-1874. The Burlington Professional Firefighters Association is registering volunteers online at

“So many people in Burlington have been deeply impacted by the flooding,” said Mayor Rick Goldring. “Despite the fact that they have been devastated, they are coming together to help each other. I encourage everyone to do what they can in the relief efforts.”

The City of Burlington has also launched a community message board at to allow residents to post messages if they have items, such as furniture, gently used clothes, non-perishable food and helpful services to donate to flood victims.

The City of Burlington has been working with Halton Region to clean up following the storm Aug. 4, repairing, reopening and cleaning roads and sidewalks, and clearing debris in creeks and parks. Halton Region is continuing to offer enhanced waste collection. Residents impacted by recent flooding are asked to place their garbage and acceptable bulk material curbside as soon as possible and leave it at the curb until collected.

Additional waste collection trucks will be in the neighbourhoods most impacted by flooding to help with garbage and bulk collection.
