Ride the Appleby Go Train to the Forbidden City

If you want a glimpse of China’s Forbidden City at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), it’s just a short train ride away from the Appleby GO Station. But you better hurry, because the exhibit will be closing Sept. 1.

To sweeten the deal, Appleby Go Train riders can save $5 on admission by clicking rom.on.ca/en/forbidden-city/home and entering promo code: GO2ROM100. You can also save $5 if you take a selfie with the emperor on a ROM poster at a transit shelter on the south-west corner of Yonge and Dundas and tweet it to #ROM100FC.

The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors features 250 masterpieces from Beijing’s Palace Museum, some never before seen outside China, alongside notable objects from the ROM's own renowned collections.

These objects, part of Chinese imperial life for five centuries in a city strictly off-limits to all but the emperor, his family, and his personal servants, tell the riveting story of a momentous chapter in China’s long and fascinating history.

The Forbidden City was built and used as the official residence for China's Emperors during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Stories of the lives of China's last Emperors and their families within this vast, mysterious complex have fascinated people for centuries.

The Forbidden City's rich history is vibrantly brought to life by an engaging cast of real-life characters, ensuring this exhibition is a highlight of the ROM's 2014 Centennial year. In June 2014, approximately 50 objects were replaced by artifacts in an extensive rotation allowing visitors to experience new stories and more exquisite objects of the Forbidden City.

The Forbidden City’s youngest visitors can enjoy family trails and treasure hunts, as well as, and touchable reproductions of some of the exhibition’s most fascinating objects. The ROM is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, and 10:00 am to 8:30 pm on Fridays.

Last entry to The Forbidden City is one and a half hours earlier than general Museum closing hours. Guided tours are offered daily at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. for only $5, with French tours available for the same price every Friday at 2 p.m.
