Burlington firefighters to visit rural homes

Residents in rural Burlington can look forward to a visit from an on-duty firefighter this summer.

These home visits are part of the Burlington Fire Department’s rural fire safety program, a public education campaign started in 2013 to test residential smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The goal of the program is to keep residents safe by ensuring homes are protected and compliant with Ontario smoke and CO alarm laws.

“This program continues to raise awareness of home fire safety and to make sure rural residences meet Ontario Fire Code requirements,” said Chief Fire Prevention Officer Joe Wintar. “Last year, we were able to visit about 600 homes and we plan to visit 1,100 homes this summer.”

Door-to-door visits will happen between 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays in July. Rural residents can take advantage of a voluntary home inspection, which includes smoke alarm testing and CO alarm check. Homeowners will be given a fire safety checklist that includes tips for home fire escape planning, smoke and CO alarm maintenance as well as kitchen and cooking safety.

Following the home visit, residents that complete a brief survey will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a home fire protection gift basket valued at $250.“Prevention is the best protection,” said Wintar. “That’s why we are continuing the door-to-door campaign to remind residents of their responsibility to maintain working home smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.”

If residents are not home at the time of the visit, they can schedule a free in-home fire safety visit by calling 905-637-8207, ext. 6333 or emailing firedepartment@burlington.ca
