July 27 Nelson Baseball Park improvements celebration
Thanks to the efforts of the Nelson Baseball Park Neighbourhood Group, Burlington now has an updated baseball gem.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the completion of the Nelson Baseball Park beautification and fencing improvements project at a free Burlington Herd baseball game on Thursday, July 27 at 593 Belvenia Rd. The ballpark is behind Nelson High school.
The game begins at 7:15 but the pre-game ceremony begins at 7 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to come early to find a seat and participate. There will also be a barbecue starting at 6:15 p.m. and a 50/50 draw in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
“In conversation with baseball enthusiasts over a number of years, we heard about this baseball ‘gem’ we have in our neighborhood park”, said Nelson Baseball Park Neighbourhood Group spokesperson Casey Cosgrove. “We had been told that the sight lines were in need of improvement so that a baseball game could be viewed clearly, without obstruction.”
“So, we gathered a community group of baseball enthusiasts to tackle this project together. With the help of the City of Burlington’s Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund we were able to improve the fencing and freshen up the baseball buildings, stands and picnic tables in fenway green, a famous baseball colour, to make our neighbourhood baseball park a first- class facility for players and spectators.”
This project was completed with the support of community volunteers and funding from the City of Burlington’s Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund program. The City of Burlington's Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund provides up to $5,000 to support projects led by neighbourhood and community groups.
This year, $26,100 has been awarded to support community projects throughout Burlington. Each year, approved projects receive up to 50 per cent of the funding for the project from the city. The neighbourhood groups then match this funding with an equal value through any combination of volunteer hours, donated services, donated materials and supplies or other funds raised.
