Feb. 14 Valentines Gala to prevent future floods
Not too sure where to take your Appleby Line honey for Valentines Day? You could take them to a fundraiser to prevent future Burlington floods.
On Sat. Feb.14, the Halton Residents Against Sewer Backup (HRASB) is holding a Valentines Fundraiser Gala for independent research of Burlington's storm and wastewater infrastructure in the hopes of preventing another flood.
The doors to the event open at 7 p.m. at the Atrium, 5420 North Service Rd., Burlington, featuring live entertainment by John Chantry, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, complimentary wine, chocolate, door prizes, and raffles. Tickets are $40, which includes a complimentary drink.
Local businesses have donated prizes raffle and silent auction and include a set of Raptors tickets, iPad Mini, 1 year VIP gym membership from Total Fitness, a $250 Air Canada travel voucher and an attractive area rug from Alexanians. Benjamin Moore, Canadian Tire, Rexall, Vero Salon, Marilu’s Market, Sherwin Williams, and Dairy Queen have also made donations.
Generous donations from several of Burlington’s local businesses reached more than $5,000. “Local business owners are warm and receptive, and they are obviously concerned about the storm and wastewater infrastructure,” said spokesperson Christina Thorpe. “Their level of concern and trust in our group is clearly reflected in their generosity.”
The group is encouraging everyone to buy a ticket and come out to this great event. The group will use funds raised by the gala to spearhead research. The group will work closely with independent experts, who will analyze last year’s storm and wastewater system failures to provide recommendations and insights into proposed land intensification plans.
HRASB is made up of residents, who were affected by the Aug. 4th flood. After the group formed, they heard from many residents who were flooded at least three different times in 2014, and multiple times over the last 14 years.
HRASB is not a registered non-profit organization and cannot issue tax receipts. To buy tickets call 289-335-0329 or visit www.HRASB.com.
