Burlington flood disaster
A teary-eyed Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring was thankful for all the community support to victims of the Aug. 4 flooding. In a few short hours, 191 mm of rain flooded more than 3,000 basements. Most home owners didn't carry enough insurance and total personal losses are in the millions. It's the biggest disaster the City has ever seen.
But there's some relief. The Red Cross, Burlington Firefighters Association and Samaritan’s Purse will help struggling home-owners with their clean-up. The United Way Burlington Relief Fund has raised $350,000 but more is needed. The City is also seeking funds from the Ontario Disaster Recovery Assistance Program and has set-up a community bulletin board for people who need help and for those who would like to donate.
