Getting a good night's sleep
By Judy Zych R.N.
If you suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), there's local relief.
OSA afflicts 20 million adult men and women in North America. People who have it stop breathing repeatedly during sleep due to airway collapse. As a result, air can't get into the lungs and the body's oxygen levels decrease.
When sleep is interrupted this way, there's an increased risk of:
* High blood pressure - stroke;
* Heart disease;
* Fatigue related motor vehicle - work accidents;
* Decreased quality of life;
OSA can occur in all ages including children. Many people with OSA don't realize they have it. Common symptoms include:
* Restless sleep;
* Excessive daytime sleepiness;
* Frequent urination at night;
* Morning headaches;
* Frequent naps;
* Gasping or choking during sleep;
* Memory loss and poor concentration.
The most effective treatment for OSA is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). These prescribed devices deliver air at a fixed pressure through a mask, ensuring that your airway stays open while you sleep. As a result, you will experience healthier sleep and wake-up feeling more rested.
With more daytime energy, life becomes more enjoyable and many risks associated with sleep apnea are minimized or eliminated. As a nurse working for MEDIchair Halton in Bronte, I've helped many people with OSA.
We work with the most advanced CPAP therapy equipment and carry an extensive variety of masks and machines from major manufacturers. Whether this is new to you or you already have a CPAP therapy device, we can help. Take the time to consider your health and we will get you on the road to healthy, refreshed sleep.
